This qualification is a general industry qualification for persons operating at an assistant level and undertaking animal care functions in an animal care workplace. It is highly recommended that whilst undertaking this qualification, the learner should have access to a companion animal workplace through either paid employment or substantial periods of work placement or work experience blocks. This field also covers: animal care receptionist and support officer; animal control and regulation assistant; animal health officer on indigenous communities; animal shelter assistant; and assistant animal welfare officer. Kate is an assistant animal welfare officer. She has the ability to carry out daily tasks such as investigating complaints of animal cruelty; rescue animals that have been treated badly; undertake inspections of properties and commercial operations; educate people about the proper treatment of animals; care and treat neglected animals; re-home animals once they have recovered. She has the ability to follow routine spoken messages; perform workplace duties following routine written notice; obtain and provide information in response to workplace requirements; complete relevant work-related documents; and participate in workplace meetings and discussions

Kate has the ability to provide daily care of animals, including the cleaning of animal housing and grooming or cleaning of animals under supervision. She can confirm workplace animal care routine schedules; check animals; maintain a clean workplace; complete hygiene practices for animals; and complete post-hygiene care of animals

ACMGAS301A Maintain and monitor animal health and wellbeing

Kate always follows animal health management practices to monitor animal health via daily observations of behaviour and condition. She is able to onitor and maintain the physical wellbeing of animals; identify and report signs of ill health or injury in animals; and administer and record animal treatments

ACMGAS303A Plan for and provide nutritional requirements for animals

Kate has the ability to carry out the process of calculating rations based on animal species needs and availability of feedstuffs. She is able to identify nutritional requirements of animals; evaluate food sources and calculate dietary requirements; prepare diets and provide food and water; and monitor feeding and watering practices

Kate is able to comply with infection control policies and procedures in animal care workplaces and relevant field locations. She has the ability to follow infection control guidelines; identify and respond to infection risks; maintain personal protection; limit contamination; and contribute to incursion readiness processes

Kate has the ability to contribute to occupational health and safety (OHS) processes where there is responsibility for own work outputs and possibly limited responsibility for the work output of others. She can plan and conduct work safely; support others in working safely; contribute to OHS participative processes; contribute to hazard identification, OHS risk assessment and risk control activities; and participate in the control of OHS emergency situations

Kate is able to identify common domestic cat breeds; identify and evaluate behavioural and housing needs; handle and restrain cats; assist with health care needs; feed cats; and maintain records in animal care industry sectors where domestic cats are bred, reared, trained, cared for or housed.
