This qualification covers the skills and knowledge required to perform a range of laboratory techniques to conduct tests and sampling in a variety of industry sectors. Employment outcomes targeted by this qualification include technical assistants, technicians, instrument operators and similar personnel. Jeremy is a technical assistant and undertakes a wide range of sampling and testing that requires the application of a broad range of technical skills and some scientific knowledge. He mainly works in a laboratory and often works closely with other personnel throughout the workplace and with suppliers. Jeremy may assist other personnel to solve technical problems and to adjust formulations and production mixes. He may also train them to collect samples and conduct basic tests reliably. Jeremy's work carries out similar tasks within one scientific discipline with occasional peak periods and some interruptions. He: -works according to established procedures in a structured environment -collects and prepares samples -conducts a wide range of basic tests and a limited range of specialised tests and measurements using manual, semi-automated and fully automated techniques -defines and solves problems of limited complexity where the information available is less obvious, but not contradictory, and can be determined by direct reasoning -works under the direction and regular supervision of senior technical staff, laboratory or quality managers, or scientific/medical personnel. His work is normally subject to frequent progress and quality checks -generally works in a team and has responsibility for his own work outputs.

MSL913001 Communicate with other people

Jeremy has the ability to receive and pass on written and oral messages, provide relevant information in response to requests within timelines and demonstrate effective interpersonal skills.

MSL913002 Plan and conduct laboratory/field work

Jeremy has the ability to plan and complete tasks individually or in a team context. The tasks involve established routines and procedures using allocated resources with access to readily available guidelines and advice. Work plans may need to be modified with supervisor agreement to suit changing conditions and priorities.

MSL924001 Process and interpret data

Jeremy has the ability to retrieve data, evaluate formulae and perform scientific calculations, present and interpret information in tables and graphs and keep accurate records. He can solve problems of limited complexity where the information may be less obvious, but not contradictory, and can be determined by direct reasoning.

MSL934002 Apply quality system and continuous improvement processes

Jeremy carries out the exercise of good laboratory practice (GLP) and effective participation in quality improvement teams. Personnel are required to ensure the quality and integrity of their own work, detect non-conformances and work with others to suggest improvements in productivity and quality.

MSL943002 Participate in laboratory or field workplace safety

Jeremy has the ability to follow workplace occupational health and safety (OHS) policies and procedures, deal with the identification and control of hazards, work safely at all times, follow emergency response procedures and contribute to the maintenance of workplace safety.

MSL922001 Record and present data

Jeremy has the ability to record and store data, perform simple calculations of scientific quantities and present information in tables and graphs. The unit of competency requires personnel to solve predictable problems using clear information or known solutions. Where alternatives exist, they are limited or apparent.

MSL924002 Use laboratory application software

Jeremy has the ability to use and apply computer software in the laboratory, field and/or production plants for analysis and reporting.

MSL925001 Analyse data and report results

Jeremy has the ability to perform scientific calculations, analyse trends and uncertainty in data and report results within the required timeframe.

MSL933002 Contribute to the achievement of quality objectives

Jeremy carries out the development of a working knowledge of quality principles and their application in laboratory/field work.

MSL944001 Maintain laboratory or field workplace safety

Jeremy has the ability to monitor and maintain work health and safety (WHS) and environmental programs within a work area where the person has supervisory responsibility for others.

MSL954001 Obtain representative samples in accordance with sampling plan

Jeremy can obtain a range of samples that are representative of the source material (e.g. raw ingredients, product in process and final product) and to prepare the samples for testing. All sampling activities are conducted in accordance with a defined sampling plan.

MSL973002 Prepare working solutions

Jeremy has the ability to prepare working solutions and to check that existing stocks of solutions are suitable for use. Working solutions include those required to perform laboratory tests. Personnel are required to calculate quantities and make dilutions.

MSL973004 Perform aseptic techniques

Jeremy has the ability to perform aseptic techniques to maintain the integrity of both the sample source and the sample. It applies to sampling techniques in tissue culture and to generic microbiological procedures.

MSL973007 Perform microscopic examination

Jeremy has the ability to set up a light microscope for optimum resolution, to prepare routine samples and to observe, identify and report sample characteristics.

MSMENV272 Participate in environmentally sustainable work practices

Jeremy can effectively measure current resource use and carry out improvements including those reducing negative environmental impacts of work practices.

MSL974003 Perform chemical tests and procedures

Jeremy can interpret chemical test requirements, prepare samples, conduct pre-use and calibration checks on equipment and perform routine chemical tests/procedures. These tests will involve several measurement steps. His job includes data processing and interpretation of results and tracking of obvious test malfunctions where the procedure is standardised. However, Jeremy is not required to analyse data, optimise tests/procedures for specific samples or troubleshoot equipment problems where the solution is not apparent.

MSL974006 Perform biological procedures

Jeremy has the ability to interpret work requirements, prepare samples, conduct pre-use and calibration checks on equipment, and perform routine biological procedures. These procedures may involve several steps and are used to classify cell types, species and biologically active compounds by analysing their biological and chemical characteristics. Jeremy's job includes data processing, interpretation of results and troubleshooting obvious departures from standard procedures.
