This qualification covers the skills and knowledge required for employment as a Higher Engineering Tradesperson or a Special Class Engineering Tradesperson (Mechanical) - Level II, Special Class Engineering Tradesperson (Fabrication) - Level II, Special Class Engineering Tradesperson (Electrical/Electronic) - Level II within the metal, engineering, manufacturing and associated industries or at equivalent levels in other industries where Engineering Tradespersons work. As a fabrication engineering tradespersons, Luke has the skills and knowledge to cut, shape, join and finish metal to make, maintain or repair metal products and structures. He can also produce moulds or patterns for metal castings, apply coatings and work with a variety of materials. He is also able to examine detailed drawings or specifications to find out job, material and equipment requirements; cut, roll, shape, bend, mould, spin, heat or hammer metal products to fabricate parts or sub-assemblies; set up and/or operate hand and machine tools, welding equipment or Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) machines; and finish products by cleaning, polishing, filing or bathing them in acid solutions, or by applying protective or decorative coatings. Luke has the performing measurement skills that allow for straightforward use of mechanical measuring devices and associated calculations. He is capable of selecting appropriate device or equipment and obtaining measurements using a range of measuring devices. He is able to maintain measuring devices and communicate measurements as required

Luke has the ability to estimate approximate answers to arithmetical problems, carrying out basic calculations involving percentages and proportions, and determining simple ratios and averages. Luke is capable of producing and interpreting simple charts and graphs from given information

Luke always follows occupational health and safety procedures in an engineering work environment. He follows safe work practices, reports workplace hazards and accidents and follows emergency procedures

Luke is capable of planning his own work where tasks involve one or more steps or functions and are carried out routinely on a regular basis. He has a good grasp on the concepts of following routine instructions, specifications and requirements. Luke regularly reviews his plans

Luke has the ability to prepare, create, produce sketches and, notate and process drawings. The sketches may be used to clarify or communicate ideas to clients or other parties. They may also be simplified versions taken from architectural drawings, designed to capture design concepts or options. The sketches may be used for estimating purposes and to show measurements and other requirements for building and construction works.

Luke is able to design, size and document the layout of sanitary drainage systems for unit developments. He can prepare for planning, identify system requirements, design system layouts and restore the work area

Luke has the ability to design, size and document the layout of surface and sub-soil stormwater drainage systems up to legal points of discharge. He is capable of carrying out the preparation for the planning, identification and confirmation of system specifications and requirements, the planning of the system layout and work finalisation processes, including records and documentation. He has the ability to restore work areas according to workplace procedures

Luke is capable of producing drawings to Australian Standard 1100 or equivalent where the critical dimensions and associated tolerances and design specifications are predetermined. He can prepare assembly, layout and detail drafting, as well as determine component and/or material requirement

Luke is capable of producing assembly, layout and detail drawings to Australian Standard 1100 or equivalent. He is able to prepare assembly, layout and detail drawing. He can also interpret specifications and select material, components and/or assemblies. Luke regularly checks drawings to ensure compliance with specifications and that assembly/fabrication is possible
